Col. Viet Luong pinned on his first star during a ceremony Wednesday at Fort Hood, Texas, becoming the first Vietnamese-born general officer in the U.S. military. Luong, the 1st Cavalry Division's deputy commanding general for maneuver, and his family escaped Vietnam in 1975 as political refugees. The infantry officer and 1987 graduate of the University of Southern California has commanded a battalion of 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers in Iraq and led the 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Brigade Combat Team, the storied Rakkasans, into combat in Afghanistan. | Military Times >>

On Sunday morning, with haze from wildfires thick in the air, Sen. John Walsh addressed a graduation for officer candidates at the Fort Harrison Army post outside Helena, Mont. "As your senator and someone who sat in your seat approximately 30 years ago today, I will always be your partner," Walsh told the small crowd. For Walsh, this should have been a perfect event. Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-Mass.) has introduced legislation that would offer disabled veterans who serve as federal employees with extra time off to seek medical care. The measure, which Lynch co-sponsored with Reps. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas), Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) and G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), would offer veterans with 13 days, or 104 hours, of "Wounded Warrior leave" during their first year as federal workers. | The Hill >>
