Growing up in the South, my life was shaped by three influential photographs hanging on my grandmother's wall: 1) Jesus Christ; 2) Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; and 3) the legendary "godfather of soul," James Brown. I remember grabbing my church shoes (you know, the ones that your momma only let you wear on Sundays), putting in my James Brown 8-track, and wetting the floor with liquid wax so I could slide and move like the godfather of soul.
