The American Legion
Dear Legion Family Members and Friends,

Melvin Huebner, a gentle, soft-spoken man, was riding out a storm last month in his hometown of Akron, Iowa. Suddenly, there was a knock on the front door. Then, a mandatory evacuation order.

Storm systems had unleashed their wrath — damaging winds, heavy rains, thunderstorms, flooding and tornadoes. Some areas had already been hit hard with significant damage. Now, the storm was threatening the levee protecting Huebner's area of town.

"The only thing (we) had time to do was grab my oxygen tank and go," said Huebner, a Korean War veteran who suffers from lung disease. For the next six days, he and his wife stayed at his brother's house.

The damage to their home was immense. The fully stocked freezer was gone. The flooded basement revealed destroyed furniture, water heater and furnace. His tools in the garage were covered in three feet of water.

Like many Legionnaires, Huebner received immediate financial assistance from The American Legion's National Emergency Fund (NEF) . The grant helped the Huebners get through those tough, early days after the disaster. Now in its 25th consecutive year of existence, NEF has provided more than $8 million to Legion Family members and posts recovering from natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods and tornadoes.

Huebner's post assisted with the grant application, but didn't stop there. Dr. Warren Thompson, commander of American Legion Post 186 in Akron, and other post members showed up to help clean up the Huebners' home, speeding up their return.

Mr. Huebner's story is just one of thousands that illustrate the importance of NEF. The NEF is entirely dependent on donations. These heartfelt contributions are used to assist veterans like Mr. Huebner in their time of need.

When I became national commander nearly a year ago, I set a goal of $1 million in donations for NEF. As the year winds down, I need your support . If you have already given, please consider another donation. If you have not given yet, please know that your kind contribution will assist a veteran in a crisis situation.

Thank you for your support of veterans, their families, America's youth and our organization's programs such as NEF.

For God and Country,
