Subject: VA Supplemental Funding Request
|
The revelations about secret waiting lists and breakdowns in management and accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are completely unacceptable and DAV continues to call on Congress and the Administration to fully investigate and hold accountable everyone at fault.
However, the underlying access crisis that created the waiting lists and ultimately led to these inexcusable actions was caused by years of inadequate budgets that forced VA to ration care and decrease access. Congress must address the funding crisis now by providing supplemental funding for veterans health care this year.
Over the past decade, DAV and our partners in The Independent Budget (IB) have told Congress that the amount of funding for medical care was more than $7.8 billion less than what was needed. For next year, we project that VA's medical care funding will be $2 billion less than needed. Similarly, the funding for VA's infrastructure has been more than $9 billion less than the true need, and that's based on VA's own internal analysis.
Enough is enough. DAV has repeatedly told Congress and the Administration that the funding provided to VA was inadequate to meet current and future health care needs of veterans. Sadly, history has proven us correct. Now Congress and the Administration must take the steps necessary to strengthen the VA health care system now and in the future so that enrolled veterans receive high-quality, timely and convenient medical care. The bills to temporarily send veterans out into the private sector will only be a band aid solution; Congress must also begin making necessary investments to rebuild VA's capacity to provide veterans with quality, timely care in the future.
Please use the prepared letter to urge your Senators and Representatives to support supplemental funding for VA health care as part of any Conference report they may consider.
As always, we greatly appreciate your support of DAV and your grassroots activism in participating in DAV CAN, our Commander's Action Network.
